Connect Cline to PromptUnit

A few fields in Cline's settings panel inside VS Code. No terminal, nothing to install.

1

Get your PromptUnit key

If you haven't already, sign up free at PromptUnit (no credit card). Once you're in, go to your Dashboard and open API Keys. Copy the key shown there, you'll paste it in a moment.

2

Open Cline's settings

In VS Code, click the Cline icon in the sidebar, then click the gear/settings icon inside the Cline panel.

3

Set the provider and paste in your details

For API Provider, choose "OpenAI Compatible" (sometimes shown as "Custom OpenAI"). Then fill in:

Base URL

https://www.promptunit.ai/api/proxy/openai

API Key

your PromptUnit key from Step 1

Model ID

gpt-4o (or whichever model you'd normally use)

The Base URL should end right after openai, don't add anything after it, Cline adds the rest itself.

4

Keep coding normally

Use Cline exactly like before. Every request now quietly passes through PromptUnit first, simple edits and questions get sent to a cheaper model automatically, anything that needs real reasoning power stays on the strong model.

5

Watch your savings

Open your PromptUnit Dashboard any time to see exactly how much you've saved, request by request. If you signed up through the free trial, your first $5 in real savings costs nothing, no card needed.

If something doesn't look right

If you see a "404" error, double-check nothing got added after the Base URL above, Cline appends the rest of the path on its own. Still stuck? Reach out and we'll sort it out with you directly.
